New Year, New Kit: A 2027 Preparedness Checklist

Somewhere between your resolution to hit the gym and your resolution to eat better, add one that only takes ten minutes: check your medical kit. Most people build a preparedness kit once, with real care, and then don't look at it again until the moment they need it. That's exactly the wrong time to find out something's expired, missing, or doesn't fit the life you're living now.

The new year is a good trigger for this. It happens once a year, it's easy to remember, and it fits naturally with the other habits people are already building this time of year.

The annual walkthrough

1. Check expiration dates, but know which ones matter most. Most medicines stay useful well past their printed date. The FDA's own long-term testing backs this up for a lot of drug types. The real exceptions are epinephrine, certain antibiotics (tetracyclines especially), and insulin. These are the items worth replacing first if they're close to expiring.

2. Rotate, don't just throw away. If something in your kit is getting close to its date but hasn't hit it yet, move it into your everyday medicine cabinet and use it for regular needs. Then restock the kit with fresh supply. This isn't wasteful — it's exactly how a well-run kit is supposed to work.

3. Update your written medicine list. If anyone in the house started a new prescription, developed a new allergy, or had a health change this year, your kit's list should reflect it. A decision guide only helps if the information behind it is current.

4. Think back on what your year actually looked like. Did you start a job with more travel? Move somewhere more rural? Add a kid to the family? Start hunting or hiking more? Your kit should match your real life, not the life you had when you first put it together.

5. Restock the small stuff. Test strips, thermometer batteries, anything single-use — these are the easiest things to forget until the moment you reach for one and it's gone.

Why this is worth doing every single year

Preparedness isn't something you buy once. It's more like insurance or a fire extinguisher — it only works if it's actually current when you need it. A kit that's three years old and half-used gives you false confidence, which in some ways is worse than having no kit at all.

If you're a Survival Scripts customer, this is also a good time to use annual kit renewal — refreshing prescription items through a quick telehealth check-in instead of starting over.

The takeaway

You don't need a New Year's resolution that takes willpower for this one. Ten minutes, once a year, checking dates and updating a list — that's the whole job. Set a calendar reminder for next January while you're thinking about it. You'll thank yourself the next time you actually need to open the kit.

Here's to being ready for whatever 2027 brings.
